Clarke opts for US event
Darren Clarke
Darren Clarke will definitely miss the Seve Trophy match after qualifying for the Tour Championship in America.

The Northen Irishman will play in the US Tour's $1m season climax rather than in the contest between Great Britain and Ireland and Continental Europe.

His place on Colin Montgomerie's side goes to 28-year-old Englishman David Howell, who missed the last match a year ago with injury.

"It's a nice bonus at the end of a season," said Howell, who finished 16th on the Order of Merit, one place adrift of automatic entry to next year's US Open.

"We don't get to play many team events, especially now the Dunhill Cup has gone. In a non-Ryder Cup year it's everyone's aim to get into it."

Montgomerie named fellow Scot Paul Lawrie as his wild-card choice, while opposite number Seve Ballesteros picked his old Ryder Cup partner Jose Maria Olazabal.

Great Britain and Ireland are the defending champions of the bi-ennial match which is being held in back-to-back years after the Ryder Cup was rescheduled following the 11 September 2001 atrocities.

Europe won the inaugural event in 2000.

The Seve Trophy is set for 6-9 November at Spain's El Saler course.

Continental Europe: Seve Ballesteros (captain), Thomas Bjorn, Fredrik Jacobson, Sergio Garcia, Alex Cejka, Ignacio Garrido, Raphael Jacquelin, Niclas Fasth, Miguel Angel Jimenez. Wild card: Jose Maria Olazabal.

Britain and Ireland: Colin Montgomerie (captain), David Howell, Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Phillip Price, Brian Davis. Wild card: Paul Lawrie.
