Sorenstam snatches glory
Annika Sorenstam
Sorenstam has won five LPGA titles ths year
Swedish superstar Annika Sorenstam defended her LPGA Safeway Classic title with a one-stroke victory over the veteran Beth Daniel.

Sorenstam fired a closing six-under-par 66 to finish the 54-hole tournament on 15-under, two strokes short of her own tournament record.

The world number one was tied for the lead with Daniel and Cristie Kerr after Saturday's second round.

But Daniel finished with a bogey-free 67, while Kerr bogeyed two of the final four holes for a closing 69 that left her three shots back.

-10 Leta Lindley
-9 Meg Mallon

Sorenstam became the first repeat champion of this tournament since Hall of Famer Kathy Whitworth won the first two editions in 1972-73.

"Obviously it feels wonderful," Sorenstam said after winning her fifth title this year.

"I love coming down the stretch when it's exciting and hitting great shots when you need to. Winning never gets old."

Sorenstam will join Whitworth and Daniel in the Hall of Fame on 9 October, her 33rd birthday.

Daniel was disappointed to slip up at the last after opening her account with a course record-equalling 62 on Friday.

"I rolled it well on 18, but I needed to make birdie," said Daniel.

"I opened with a 62 and didn't win the golf tournament, so I should be just a little disappointed."
