Aldo's X-Factor
John Aldridge in his playing days
That's three times I've sang that song!

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has won Ireland's Celebrity X Factor competition - even though he can't sing!

Aldridge, who won 69 caps for the Republic of Ireland, wooed the public with interesting versions of Lily The Pink and Ring Of Fire.

After seeing off actress Aine Ní Dhroighneáin - the star of an Irish soap opera - in the final, Aldo admitted: "I'm lost for words."

And not for the first time - he had to rely on the audience to help him through Ring Of Fire earlier in the competition when his mind went blank.

But the great Irish public took Aldridge to their hearts, preferring to concentrate on his passion and enthusiasm, rather than his off-key moments (of which there were plenty) and uncanny impressions of your dad dancing at a wedding.

Some of his previous highlights included Rocking All Over The World, Living Next Door to Alice, Sweet Caroline, My First, My Last, My Everything and The Fields of Athenry - not a bad setlist for a man whose only previous foray into the music business was on The Anfield Rap - sample lyric: "Alright Aldo/Sound as a pound/I'm cushty la but there's nothing down."

Aldridge, who missed Liverpool's Community Shield defeat of Chelsea to contest the final, saw off a host of actors and politicians, including the actor who played evil Trevor Jordache in Brookside - last seen being bumped off by Anna Friel.

"I want to thank every single person who voted for me during the show. It's been a rollercoaster ride," he said.

Aldridge's efforts raised money for a Dublin childrens' hospital charity.
