You can call me Barnsley

A worried football fan has changed his name to 'Save Barnsley FC' in a bid to help save the struggling club.

Paul Stevenson adopted the unusual moniker after visiting a deed poll website to make it official.

But the 23-year-old sports journalist insists there is method in his madness.

He told BBC Sport Online: "I'm trying to make a serious point. I'm on a crusade to make people aware of how much trouble Barnsley are in.

"Not many people, apart from the diehard supporters, seem committed to saving the club - so if by doing this I can help, I'll be more than happy."

'Save' maintains he has had no real problems since changing his name, although he admits to taking "a bit of stick" from his mates.

"My life's gone as normal," he explained, but it's quite hard for people to get used to.

Trouble

"My mother calls me Save when she's having a go at me - and my father doesn't get back from holiday in Turkey until Tuesday, so he'll have a bit of a shock!"

Unfortunately work commitments with sports website Ananova have restricted Save's appearances at Oakwell this season, but he feels he is doing his bit.

"The more people who find out about my name, the more people will realise Barnsley's plight," he reasoned.

Fifty Tykes fans are marching from Oakwell to Chesterfield on Saturday in the hope of raising 25,000 for their troubled club, although Save says it is only a short-term fix.

All is not well at Oakwell

"The problem is, we've got wasters at Barnsley who are on 8,000 a week, so until that's sorted out we're not going to get anywhere," he explained.

"I'd urge anyone with the best interests of the club at heart to make a donation to the Barnsley FC Supporters Society.

"If my club goes bust then I shall probably stick with this name for the rest of my life and that's quite unthinkable."

At least he doesn't support Queen of the South.
