Millwall 2-0 Ipswich
Tony Warner
Tony Warner made a string of fine saves
Managerless Millwall pulled off an heroic victory which sets up an intriguing Worthington Cup second round, second leg tie at Portman Road next week, and puts the second division side within sight of an historic upset.

In this first leg tie the Millwall heroes were Millwall goalscorers Paul Ifill and Tim Cahill, who struck in either half, and goalkeeper Tony Warner who kept out Ipswich with a stunning display.

Ifill gave them the lead with a fine solo goal after 36 minutes.

A free-kick on the left flank was tapped short to Christophe Kinet, who found Ifill with a deep cross into the box.

The young striker left three Ipswich defenders standing as he turned skilfully and drove the ball into the bottom far corner.

The home side had to withstand an Ipswich onslaught, before Cahill doubled their advantage 11 minutes from the end.

The young Australian, who would have been playing at the Olympics had he not made an appearance for Western Samoa at youth level, pounced on some sloppy defending and squeezed the ball past England goalkeeper Richard Wright.

The Lions goalkeeper Warner deserve a full share of the plaudits after pulling off a string of fine saves, the pick of the bunch coming after 74 minutes when his one-handed stop to denied Town substitute Matt Holland.
