World Cup 2010: Uruguay's Diego Forlan eyes Golden Boot

Diego Forlan

Forlan's swerving equaliser deceives Dutch keeper

Diego Forlan still hopes to win the Golden Boot at this year's World Cup despite suffering a thigh injury.

The Uruguay striker, who has scored four goals so far in the tournament, was substituted in 83rd minute during the semi-final against the Netherlands.

"I had some tiredness in my thigh when I started the game and it was difficult," said the 31-year-old.

"I hope to be fit" the striker added ahead of the third place play-off tie against Germany on Saturday.

Forlan has scored four goals in South Africa while Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder and David Villa of Spain have both netted five times.

German duo Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller like Forlan have also scored on four occasions and are also in contention to finish as the tournament's leading goalscorer.

The suspension of Forlan's strike partner Luis Suarez for Wednesday's semi-final had left Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez little choice but to give the responsibility of leading the Uruguayan attack to his captain.

Forlan added to his goal tally in South Africa with the equaliser against the Netherlands but was unable to prevent his side losing 3-2 to the Dutch.

"I was limping and I was trying to stay in the game but in the end I could not help anybody," said the Atletico Madrid striker.

Even with Forlan's thigh injury he hopes to be fit for the third place play-off game in Port Elizabeth.

Despite Forlan's disappointment against the Netherlands the former Manchester United forward can reflect on a season filled with success.

"It has been the best year of my career," stated Forlan. "Winning the Europa League with Atletico Madrid, reaching that final and then reaching another semi-final of the World Cup is just great.

"But we are still so disappointed because we were so close to a World Cup final and we have missed a great chance."
