World Cup 2010: Franck Ribery undergoes groin surgery

Ribery is expected to be fit for the start of the new Bundesliga season

France and Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery has had an operation on his groin.

The 27-year-old underwent the surgery in Munich on Friday morning.

Ribery, who has been told to rest for the next 10 days before he can start light running, is expected to be fit for the start of the season.

He returned to France on Thursday with the rest of the French squad following their elimination from the World Cup after coming bottom of Group A.

The operation comes at the end of a difficult season for Ribery, who has suffered problems both on and off the pitch.

Even before France's dismal World Cup performance - in which they managed only one point from their three matches - Ribery had endured a season to forget.

He was restricted to 10 league starts for Bayern because of a problem with his left knee and missed the Champions League final against Inter Milan in May through suspension after being sent off in the semi-final.

In the same month, he was implicated in a scandal surrounding an underage escort girl but also awarded a new five-year contract by his club.
