World Cup 2010: Tabarez looks forward after draw

Highlights - Uruguay 0-0 France

Uruguay coach Oscar Washington Tabarez insisted he was happy enough with a draw from his side's opening Group A match against France at the World Cup.

An uninspiring match, during which Uruguay substitute Nicolas Lodeiro was sent off late on, ended goalless.

It means all four teams in the group are on a point following hosts South Africa's earlier 1-1 draw with Mexico.

"We're quite happy," said Tabarez. "The group is now evenly balanced and the next games will be crucial.

Diego Forlan was far and away Uruguay's most dangerous player, the Atletico Madrid frontman forcing two fine saves from France keeper Hugo Lloris, while also firing wide when well placed 12 yards out.

With just under 10 minutes to go, Lodeiro was dismissed after picking up two yellow cards, the second a nasty lunge at Bacary Sagna.

We had a completely different idea of how we wanted to play

"Theoretically, any card is avoidable but I was once a player and I know what it is like to be out there," commented Tabarez.

"My way of doing things has given us good results so far and we will continue on this road.

"A coach has to be critical of behaviour on the pitch that gives us yellow cards - one today was for protesting and I don't like that at all. I will talk to the players and try to stop that happening again in the future.

"The other side also had cards, remember that. If we didn't have these talking points, though, football would be very boring indeed."

And on the threat of France, he added: "It was as tough as we expected.

"When you consider France's history and the fact they had far more finances than us, then I am happy with a draw, which we deserved.

"But we're not happy with our game as we had a completely different idea of how we wanted to play.

"All the teams are on the same footing now."

Uruguay's next match is against South Africa on Wednesday, 16 June in Pretoria.
