Togo press call for FA sacking
Togo players threatened to boycott the Switzerland game
Togo press on Tuesday called for the sacking of the embattled federation chiefs.

This comes a day after their 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, which ended their hopes of progressing in the World Cup.

All the national newspapers called for the FA to be radically reformed and for it to become democratic.

A farcical row over player's bonuses saw coach Otto Pfister walk out only to return and then the team threaten to boycott the match with Swiss.

"The Hawks could not possibly have beaten Switzerland, because they did not have good enough morale," was the opinion of the daily 'Le Republicain'.

"The Togo football chiefs did not create the right conditions for the players.

"Beleagured in the bonuses affair, the Hawks did not play well. We are sick of it in Togo and all that went on in Germany is the reflection of this country unfortunately," the paper went on, adding that Togo FA directors should resign en masse.

The bi-weekly Forum de la Semaine called for the federation to become a democratic institution.

"Our sport, in particular football must become democratic, it must be removed from the hands of those who are running it at the moment.

"Whether the World Cup finals adventure ended prematurely or not, the players deserved not only to compete in it, but also to be allowed not to feel for once like a flock of sheep by the directors of the federation."

A writer for the daily Le Regard warned that far from being resolved the bonuses row would drag on.

"The least one can say is that the atmosphere is far from congenial at the heart of the FA.

"Even if the belief is that an agreement has been reached between the players and the federation over the bonuses, the affair is not finished."

Aside from that problem Pfister is to sue the secretary-general of the Federation for defamatory remarks claiming he was an alcoholic.
