Serbia & Montenegro call up Ergic

Ivan Ergic
Ergic may win his first cap at the World Cup
Australian-born midfielder Ivan Ergic was the surprise inclusion in Serbia & Montenegro's World Cup squad.

The uncapped midfielder, who plays for Basel, was brought in as possible back-up for Zvonimir Vukic, who has been suffering from a foot injury.

"He is a fine young player, I have followed him a lot," said assistant coach Goran Stevanovic.

Coach Ilija Petkovic has also included Manchester United star Nemanja Vidic and ex-Chelsea player Mateja Kezman.

Former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic has also been added to the 23-man squad.

"The chosen ones have shown superb qualities in the qualifiers," said Petkovic.

"We can say this is the best this country can offer."

The national team coach has kept faith with the youth in his squad by selecting defender Dusan Basta of Red Star Belgrade and striker Mirko Vucinic of Lecce, who will both also take part in the Under-21 European Championship later this month.

Serbia & Montenegro have been pitted against tough opponents in Group C - Argentina, Holland and Ivory Coast.

"We first play two soccer giants, the Argentines and the Dutch," said Petkovic.

"Those games will show where we really stand. We can be outplayed, but we cannot be outwitted by any of our opponents."
