Carson promoted to England squad
Scott Carson
Carson will be third-choice England keeper at the World Cup
Liverpool's Scott Carson has been confirmed as the newest member of England's World Cup squad, as replacement for injured Robert Green.

Carson, 20, was on the standby list and steps up to become number three in the squad behind Tottenham's Paul Robinson and David James of Manchester City.

Manchester United's Ben Foster, who spent the season on loan at Watford, has been called up to the standby list.

Foster, 23, has flown back from holiday in Dubai to link up with the squad.

Green was ruled out of the World Cup finals after rupturing his groin in Thursday's B international defeat by Belarus.

The 26-year-old came on at half-time, but within minutes he collapsed taking a goal-kick, allowing Belarus to level.

Green told BBC Sport: "I'm in agony. I felt it tweak as I made a save then it ripped. I'm devastated."

Carson was Green's replacement at the Madejski Stadium and now gets his chance to go to Germany.

Foster joined Manchester United from Stoke in July 2005 for a deal potentially worth 3m, and was immediately loaned to Watford.

He was an unexpected addition to the standby list, with Alec Chamberlain, the Watford goalkeeper coach, admitting: "It was a surprise to hear the news. But he has had a fantastic season and played such a major role for us, so in a way perhaps it is not a major shock.

"The whole season has been a fairy tale for him: joining Manchester United from Stoke last summer, helping Watford to promotion and then being called up by England."
