England Women 3-0 Norway Women

Williams scored twice as England dominated the match

England continued their build-up to the European Championship finals with a convincing win over the once vastly superior Norway at Shrewsbury.

Fara Williams opened the scoring with a close-range shot that beat Norway goalkeeper Caroline Knutsen and went in off the post.

Lindsay Johnson rose to head home a Karen Carney cross for the second.

Williams sealed the win 10 minutes from time, drilling a 30 yard shot into the roof of the net.

Eleven of the first 12 meetings between these two nations were won by Norway, but the last three have gone England's way and this was the most comfortable.

And after beating Canada to win last month's Cyprus Cup final in their last outing, this latest success will send confidence soaring ahead of August's Euro 2009.

It gave national coach Hope Powell's team a victory that stretched their recent run to 14 games with just one defeat.

Powell said: "We won comfortably and to score three goals against a team that's ranked highly in the world will be good for confidence.

"It was very physical and we tired towards the end, but we coped with it well and in patches we did very well.

"Norway have always caused us problems, so to win like that - quite comfortably towards the end - shows how far we've come and progressed.

"Now we've got to keep the momentum, the belief and the confidence going towards the Euro finals."

Powell's team were the better side for most of the match though they were lucky not to go behind after just 10 minutes, when right winger Ingvild Isaksen broke clear only to send a 15 yard shot wide.

Williams opened the scoring eight minutes later, forcing a close range shot under Knutsen that went in off the near post.

England had the upper hand following the opener but took until six minutes before the interval to create their next goalscoring opportunity.

When it arrived, however, the chance led to the second goal as Johnson rose to head home Carney's superbly flighted cross for her first international goal.

The home side could then have wrapped up victory by the break, Carney having a 39th minute effort tipped over the bar by Knutsen then two minutes later striker Eni Aluko driving in an 18 yard shot that deflected off a defender on to the near post.

England continued to dominate after the interval, but they were unable to find a killer goal and might have let the game slip in the closing stages.

Isaksen went close with a 73rd minute cross-shot, then substitute Elise Thorsnes dragged an effort wide following a dreadful clearance by goalkeeper Rachel Brown.

But Williams made sure of victory 10 minutes from time, drilling a 30 yard shot into the roof of the net for her 25th England goal.
