Women's World Cup final as it happened
Germany 2-0 Brazil (full time)

By Mark Mitchener

1504: I'll leave the final word to Morrissam on 606:

"A predictable outcome in the end. Brazil were the flair team of the tournament (especially Marta and Christiane), but the experience and consistency of the Germans did for them today"

1458: Despite that penalty miss, Brazil striker Marta wins the "Golden Shoe" for the top goalscorer, having found the net seven times during the tournament.

Karen Walker
"When Germany have a chance to score a goal, you can see they have composure"
England's record goalscorer Karen Walker

Sue Smith
"Brazil were fantastic to watch, but Germany had that psychological edge you get through winning games and not conceding"
England winger Sue Smith

"When you go that long without conceding a goal, you have that feeling of invicibility about it. But the key was the missed penalty"
BBC pundit Gavin Peacock

1450: FULL TIME - Germany 2-0 Brazil
Germany are world champions - all their substitutes run on to celebrate, while some of the Brazilians sink to the turf in disappointment.

"The winner will be the team with the strongest goalkeeper, which just about sums up women's football I'm sad to say"
Trickysnap on 606

1449: Germany nearly grab a third but Martina Mueller shoots straight at keeper Andreia.

1448: Germany defend in numbers as Elaine bursts forward and wins Brazil a free-kick about 30 yards out. Daniela takes a very long run-up like a West Indian fast bowler, but her shot is straight at German keeper Nadine Angerer, who has played every minute of this World Cup and is yet to concede a single goal. She makes a straightforward catch.

1447: As the clock reaches 90 minutes, the fourth official signals four minutes of stoppage time. Surely it's too late for Brazil now? Anyone remember the Man City-Gillingham play-off final in 1999 where City scored twice in stoppage time and eventually won on penalties?

1445: Brazil's Daniela brings down sub Martina Mueller, and the referee looks like she's going to reach for a card... before realising that Daniela's already been booked, and she stays on.

1444: Germany's Annike Krahn limps off with an injury. Brazil captain Aline fires in a free-kick which beats everyone. Brazil make their final change as Aline is replaced by the experienced Katia. Brazil now look like they have two at the back and five up front.

Germany win a corner, and predictably they're in no hurry. Renate Lingor takes the kick, and it's headed in by Simone Laudehr as the Brazilian marking lets them down a little. Four minutes left. One hand on the trophy?

"If I was German, I wouldn't be celebrating just yet"
Leeds United's Lucy Ward, BBC TV summariser

1437: Another substitution for Brazil, with veteran centre-forward Pretinha replacing defender Tania. Clearly, Brazil are going for broke here with 10 minute left - they have to.

1436: Germany make a second change, with Kosovan-born midfielder Fatmire Bajramaj replacing Sandra Smisek, who's played well on the right wing.

1434: Martina Mueller shows no club loyalty when bringing down her Wolfsburg team-mate Christiane with a fierce challenge. Brazil's Daniela takes a free-kick quickly and top scorer Marta has a chance from the edge of the box but it sails high and wide.

1432: Linda Bresonik strides forward but curls her shot over the bar.

1431: As Germany prepare to make a change, Daniela's free-kick evades everyone. The substitution is made as Wolfsburg's Martina Mueller replaces Melanie Behringer, who had been an injury doubt before the game, on the left-hand side.

1429: Just under 20 minutes left for Brazil to get back on level terms. They're breaking forward at will, but some good defending from Germany restricts them to a corner. Daniela floats the corner in, but Birgit Prinz is back helping her defence and heads clear.

1427: Linda Bresonik, who's already been booked, is on thin ice here as she fouls Formiga down near the corner, although Germany clear the resulting free-kick.

1424: Brazil take the corner and again Nadine Angerer comes off her line to punch clear. She's keeping Germany in the game at the moment.

1423: Marta wriggles away from a couple of German defenders, and wins a free-kick which is just outside the box but over in the left channel. Daniela's free-kick comes off the post and is superbly saved by German keeper Nadine Angerer, who pushes it out for a corner before high-fiving a defender.

1422: Sandra Smisek crosses from the right for Germany, but it flies safely into the side netting.

Before the penalty is taken, Brazil make a substitution, replacing Ester with Rosana. Marta takes the spot-kick, which is saved by Nadine Angerer low to her right. Germany are still yet to concede a goal at this World Cup.

Linda Bresonik brings down Christiane and is yellow-carded. Brazil have a penalty!

1417: Kerstin Garefrekes's cross is deflected behind for Germany's first corner. Simone Laudehr whips it in, but the unmarked Annike Krahn puts her glancing header just wide.

1415: Daniela is yellow-carded for a strong challenge on Simone Laudehr.

1414: Marta feeds Daniela, but Simone Laudehr stands tall in defence and staves off the attack.

1410: The USA team are sat behind the BBC TV commentators. Apparently they and the Brazil team can't stand each other - and no surprise that the USA team cheered Prinz's goal as loudly as the German fans. Marta bursts into the box but is denied by a good tackle by Annike Krahn.

Germany break down the right, Sandra Smisek takes two defenders with her and perfectly tees up Birgit Prinz, who doesn't really hit it that well but it goes right under Brazil keeper Andreia - who, to be honest, should have done better.

"Regardless of the outcome, we know this is going to be a more entertaining match than the upcoming Boro match"
Gunnerrossmcd on 606

1406: Daniela chases a through ball and goes in hard on German keeper Nadine Angerer, who takes a knee in the face for her trouble.

1405: Renata Costa bundles Sandra Smisek over to give Germany a free-kick down near the corner flag. While they wait for the free-kick, Brazil's Ester and Germany's Annike Krahn exchange a few harsh words. Renate Lingor hooks the free-kick in and the ball eventually falls to Melanie Behringer, who skies her left-footed shot high over the bar.

1403: Brazil keeper Andreia is called into action for possibly the first time, to collect an over-hit through ball.

1402: Brazil have a quick "huddle" before Germany get the second half under way. A bespectacled female Fifa official on the touchline gives them a five-second countdown on the fingers of one hand.

1354: BBC pundit Gavin Peacock awards Marta his "best goal of the tournament" gong for her semi-final goal against the USA, just beating Xiaoli Song's effort for China against Denmark.

Karen Walker
"Brazil just need a bit of luck and composure, although Smisek should have scored for Germany"
England's record goalscorer Karen Walker

Sue Smith
"Germany will know Brazil have caused them some problems. Marta's been unfortunate, but Christiane trying to get Garefrekes booked isn't a nice sight to see. The Brazil keeper hasn't really been troubled"
Current England winger Sue Smith

Very little to choose between the sides - it's been a close first half.

1346: We have the usual token one minute of stoppage time added. Brazil win another corner, but Elaine shoots with her weaker left foot and it's well wide.

"Brazil's cheating invalidates any skill they might have. They have no respect for their opponents, the ref or the fans - and most importantly the game"
Predictmachine on 606

1343: Brazil win their second corner. Marta takes it, and although defender Elaine nearly creates room for a chance, Germany get players behind the ball and clear their lines.

1341: The two number 10s clash as Marta brings down Renate Linghor, and it's always a worrying sign when the stretcher-bearers come on. But Linghor's up on her feet in a minute or so.

1337: Renate Lingor tees up Simone Laudehr, whose daisy-cutter of a shot slides wide.

1336: Ester's cross just evades Daniela at the far post.

1335: The German substitutes, who all look to be wearing identical headbands, cheer their team on from the bench as Renate Lingor winces after losing her boot in a tackle. Just over 10 minutes to half-time, and it's quite a tight game.

"Brazil full-back Maycon takes twice as many strides as German winger Kerstin Garefrekes, but she's just as quick"
BBC TV commentator Guy Mowbray

1328: The tackles fly in from both sides but referee Tammy Ogston is letting the game flow. Germany are momentarily down to 10 players as Ariane Hingst gets some treatment off the pitch.

1325: Marta runs through the German defence before she is denied by a good tackle from Annike Krahn.

1324: Daniela hammers a fierce shot which beats keeper Nadine Angerer but strikes the post. Within a minute, Germany break, Kerstin Garefrekes crosses from the right but Melanie Behringer's first touch lets her down and it goes wide.

1323: Formiga has a go from distance, but keeper Nadine Angerer watches it well and makes a comfortable catch.

1322: Marta scuffs a shot well wide from 25 yards.

"Are there no tall women who fancy going in goal? How many goals have been tame loops or lobs over the keeper?"
Kilkennyblue on 606

1318: Germany coach Silvia Neid is getting annoyed on the touchline after an outrageous dive from Brazil's Christiane, as both sets of supporters urge their teams on. Brazil win the first corner, which Formiga takes but it's headed away at the near post.

1317: It's now more than nine hours since Germany conceded a goal in World Cup matches. Formiga barges Birgit Prinz off the ball, but no foul is given.

1315: Sandra Smisek spoons a shot over the bar, while the Brazilians harangue the assistant referee for failing to flag for offside. Brazil captain Aline gets a word in her ear from the referee.

1311: The Brazilian Football Federation, buoyed by their national team's success here are apparently planning to set up their own women's league. A good interception by defender Ariane Hingst diverts the ball away from top-scorer Marta.

1308: Germany's Kerstin Garefrekes becomes the first player to be booked for a foul. The Brazilian player Christiane, rather distastefully, brandishes an imaginary card in her effort to get Garefrekes a caution. Brazil swing in a free-kick which is fumbled by keeper Nadine Angerer, and Formiga's effort goes wide.

1306: Maycon is brought down by Kerstin Stegemann, giving Brazil a free-kick about 25 yards out. Daniela's free-kick is headed away.

1305: Marta tries her luck from distance but it's easy for Germany keeper Nadine Angerer. Germany break down the right and Kerstin Garefrekes has a shot which hits the side netting.

1304: German striker Birgit Prinz goes on a run before being hacked down in midfield. The free-kick is taken quickly but wasted.

"Unless Brazil get one of the Germans sent off, I think it's going to be a Germany win"
Leeds United's Lucy Ward, BBC TV summariser

1301: Aussie referee Tammy Ogston gets us under way. Both her assistants are Mexicans. Brazil kick off.

"Both teams are unchanged - Germany winger Melanie Behringer passed a late fitness test, while Brazil's Marta is the tournament's top scorer with seven"
BBC TV commentator Guy Mowbray

1257: National anthems. Most of the Germans sing along to theirs, while the Brazilian players all turn to their left and adopt hand-on-heart poses usually associated with American sportsmen while their antherm plays.

"I still predict a German win. They've been the beat team in the tournament"
Rockingthejoint on 606

1253: It looks like a full house in Shanghai. Fifa chief Sepp Blatter - who in 2004 provoked a hostile reception when he urged women footballers to wear skimpier kits to increase the popularity of the women's game - is introduced to the teams.

1251: Teams are in the tunnel. The Brazilians are jumping around like they've just arrived at a disco, whereas the Germans look rather stern and focused.

Karen Walker
"For years, the game has been dominated by Germany, the Scandinavian teams and the USA - it's great that Brazil have got there through sheer flair"
England's record goalscorer Karen Walker

Jacqui Oatley
"The Germans know all about Brazilian striker Christiane, because she plays in Germany"
BBC commentator Jacqui Oatley

1245: The TV build-up has started, on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website (UK users only). Gabby Logan is your host, limbering up for Strictly Come Dancing.

"From what I've seen, I favour Brazil. They seem to be that bit more creative in front of goal, which is always a useful skill to have"
Marco 4 on 606

1238: Of course, we've already had one game today - the third and fourth place play-off. That resulted in a fairly comfortable 4-1 win for the USA against Norway.

"Admittedly I've kind of lost interest when England got knocked out but I reckon the Brazilians may win it. The USA were fantastic against us so if Brazil were able to stop the Yank express then I reckon they'll do it"
Marknobleisthefuture on 606

1233: The form book shows that both teams are in good shape - Brazil knocked out the USA in the semi-finals, not only shocking a US team that had not lost for 51 games, but hammering them 4-0. Meanwhile, Germany - the defending champions - breezed past Norway with a 3-0 victory. They're yet to even concede a goal in this tournament.
