Rangers 1-0 Kaiserslautern

A Jorg Albertz strike in the 87th minute gave Rangers a deserved win in this Uefa Cup first leg tie with Kaiserslautern.

Rangers laid siege to the German side's goal for much of the game and should have had more than one goal to their name.

Dick Advocaat's men were impressive in the first half and created a number of excellent chances.

Rangers appeared to run out of ideas in the second period, but their endeavour never diminished and the late goal was reward for all their hard work.

Rangers made just one change from the team that hammered Celtic on Sunday, with Michael Mols replacing the cup-tied Tore Andre Flo.

Mols almost made an immediate impact when he was inches away from making contact with a dangerous Kenny Miller cross in the 3rd minute.

Kaiserslautern made it clear that they were not going to sit back and defend in an end-to-end opening period.

World Cup-winner Youri Djorkaeff let loose with a fierce shot after six minutes but Rangers' German goalkeeper Stefan Klos was able to push the ball away.

The pace of Miller was unsettling the visiting defence and the young forward was twice denied good chances by dubious offside decisions.

Rangers should have taken the lead in the 15th minute when Lorenzo Amoruso burst out of defence and released Albertz with a marvellous pass.

Albertz, however, was unable to beat Kaiserslautern keeper George Koch.

Rangers were well on top but Kaiserslautern continued to look dangerous. Murat Yakin went close with a free kick and it took a Claudio Reyna block on the goal-line to deny Hani Ramzy.

The Ibrox side then scorned two gilt-edged chances, when a Barry Ferguson shot from just seven yards out was stopped by the legs of Koch in the 26th minute.

Moments later, Miller completely mistimed a header in front of goal.

Ronald de Boer kept up the attacking momentum for Rangers with a strike from distance which had Koch scrambling to keep it out.

Miller then blasted another great chance well wide of the target, and Albertz had a free kick saved.

Rangers could not find their rhythm in the second half and the frantic flow of the first period gave way to a more pedestrian pace as the German side grew in influence.

With 65 minutes gone, the Scottish champions won two free kicks in rapid succession but Koch dealt with decent efforts from Albertz then Amoruso.

Neil McCann replaced De Boer, while Ferguson forced a save with a good header and Mols went close after a sharp turn on the edge of the penalty area, but Rangers were running out of ideas.

With ten minutes remaining, Rangers were handed an advantage when Jorgen Pettersson was ordered off for a second bookable offence.

Rod Wallace came on for Mols and had a hand in the winning goal in the 87th minute.

It was the substitute who touched the ball into Albertz's path and the big German rifled the ball home from 20 yards.

McCann almost snatched another goal but his goalbound shot struck team-mate Miller and deflected over the bar.
