Paul Jewell contemplates his side's Carling Cup final defeat
Wigan boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side was outclassed by Manchester United in the 4-0 Carling Cup defeat.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "We gave bad goals away and United were absolutely clinical - it was like a David against Goliath match.

"We were playing a world class side with world class players and we were beaten by a better side.

"It's tough to take, but we've lost to one of the most decorated sides in the world and there's no shame in that."

Wigan captain Arjan de Zeeuw was more critical in his reaction to the defeat, insisting that defensive errors cost his side dear.

He said: "I feel pretty awful. People say it's nice to be in a final but when you get here you want to win it.

"We set out in the second half to have a right go but we made critical errors at the back and were punished for it.

"When you're here you want to win the trophy, but we were nowhere near that and we're very disappointed."

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan felt that luck deserted the Latics and thought that Henri Camara's crucial miss could have changed the outcome.

He said: "I am disappointed to say the least because if Henri Camara puts away his chance at 1-0 it would have been a totally different game.

"In the first minute our goalkeeper pulls his hamstring and you think 'maybe the Gods are against us'.

"We were unlucky to go a goal down and had Camara taken the chance who knows?"
