Chairman Andrew Fitton critical of Swindon Town's squad

Swindon 1-1 Hartlepool

Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton has criticised the hunger of his struggling squad and Danny Wilson's recruitment.

Wilson quit in March with the club in the relegation zone, where they remain, six points from safety with six games remaining until the end of the season.

"We recruited the players the manager wanted and built a squad we thought was stronger than last year," Fitton told BBC Wiltshire.

"The truth is too many aren't good enough. Too many don't want it enough."

Fitton brought in Paul Hart to replace Wilson but results have not picked up and Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Hartlepool left the club 23rd in the table.

Fitton conceded that Town had not managed to replace the goal-scoring prowess of the likes of Simon Cox, Billy Paynter and Charlie Austin who had given the club a cutting edge in recent seasons and helped them reach the play-off final last term.

And reflecting on the draw against Hartlepool he added: "When you're in the situation we're in you need people who are willing to put their necks on the line and throw themselves in front of the bullet that are being shot at them.

"I saw that from a handful of players. I take my hat off to them, but I didn't see it from a lot of other players."
