Keepers do make mistakes - Sunderland goalkeeper Gordon

Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon believes players in his position must accept they will make mistakes over the course of a season.

Gordon came under fire from manager Steve Bruce for his display as the Black Cats threw away a 2-1 lead in the 3-2 defeat by Wolves last month.

"You're never going to go through a season and not make a mistake," Gordon told BBC Newcastle.

"Every single goalkeeper in the league will probably have made a mistake."

The 27-year-old continued: "I didn't think it was that horrendous, obviously we'd have liked to have won the game and everybody was probably below par in that performance.

"I was below par and I take responsibility for that performance."

The Scotland international returned to the Sunderland side after injury and the form of Belgium Under-21 international Simon Mignolet, in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham last month.

Since then the former Hearts custodian, who has made 84 appearances since joining in August 2007, has kept two clean sheets including one in Sunday's 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham.

"It's the manager's prerogative [to criticise], I just get down to business and do what I do," Gordon added.

"If the manager wants to give me stick in the press there's not a great deal I can do about that, other than if chosen to go back out on the park, go out there and do the business.

"I really didn't take any notice of that, the same as I wouldn't have taken any notice if people we building me up to much in the other direction.

"I keep my feet on the ground and back my own ability to go out there and perform."
