Sunderland defender Pascal Chimbonda has told fans he is fully committed to the club and wants to help Roy Keane's side challenge for honours this season.

Chimbonda, 29, was a Carling Cup winner with former club Tottenham Hotspur and is determined to help his new employers achieve similar success on the pitch.

"I came here to play, not sit on the bench," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I want to bring something to the club, help the club to win games and finish in the top half of the Premier League."

Manager Roy Keane signed the French international full-back from Tottenham in August for an undisclosed fee.

Meanwhile the Wearsiders travel to another of Chimbonda's former clubs when they visit 'bogey' team Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Wigan brought Chimbonda to the Premier League but the full-back lasted just one season before his form at right-back prompted Tottenham to seal his signature for 4.5m in August 2006.

Supporters reacted angrily to his departure at the time but the Guadeloupe-born defender believes he will avoid a hostile reception on his return to the JJB Stadium.

"It's been two years since I left and maybe the fans will have forgotten that," he said.

"I'll go to Wigan not thinking about it, because I'm Sunderland and I play for Sunderland.

"I don't think about the fans, I just think about the game."
