Sunderland start promotion party
Sunderland manager Roy Keane was out walking his dog when his team clinched promotion
Keane found out Sunderland were promoted via text message
Sunderland's players have revealed how they took in their promotion to the Premiership - while manager Roy Keane was out walking his dog.

Keane, who has led Sunderland up in his first season in charge, did not watch Derby's defeat by Crystal Palace, which sealed the Black Cats' promotion.

But captain Dean Whitehead said: "I watched it with a few of the lads.

"It was strange to be promoted without kicking a ball but it goes without saying that we are all delighted."

Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans, who is on loan at the Stadium of Light with fellow Manchester United youngster Danny Simpson, caught the second half of Derby's match in a bar in Durham.

He added: "It's brilliant. I am still shaking with the adrenaline. Coming to Sunderland has been unbelievable for me, the way things have turned out.

"Me and Danny Simpson were just talking about how brilliant the fans are here. They have really appreciated us and I am so pleased for them."

Winger Carlos Edwards, whose goal handed the Black Cats their 3-2 victory over Burnley on Friday night, which took them to the brink of promotion, was at a barbecue with friends when Derby lost.

"It feels wonderful," he said. "The most important thing is promotion but we want the medal as well.

"I had a barbecue with some friends and watched some of the Derby game. It's great news. Roy Keane being in charge has given us that extra drive."

Keane himself added: "It's great news for the club. I am delighted for the players, who have done a fantastic job.

"I am also delighted for all the staff, who have played such a vital part, the fans, who have been tremendous in their support for the team and for chairman Niall Quinn and the board, who have been a great support since I arrived at the club."

Quinn said: "Looking back at what Roy and his staff have put together in such a short space of time, it's amazing, they are brilliant people."
