Liam Lawrence expected to leave Stoke City

Liam Lawrence is expected to leave Stoke City in the summer, although he has dismissed reports claiming that he has handed in a transfer request.

He said quotes he gave to an Irish reporter about a possible move to Wolves were taken out of context.

"I explained to him that the manager [Tony Pulis] said if I wanted to leave for football reasons, he would help me out," the winger told BBC Radio Stoke.

"Suddenly I'm putting transfer requests in and that's not the case."

Lawrence, who made just 14 Premier League starts for the Potters last season, continued: "I want to play football for Stoke, but that's becoming increasingly less likely all the time.

"I've had meetings with the manager and expressed my feelings. The main reason I came to Stoke was to play regularly, and once I did that I was a good player.

I would hate to leave under a cloud, and if I stay, the supporters know that I'll give what I always give and that's 100%

"But I feel as though I'm undermining myself and the club now because I'm not playing as regularly and I'm not the same player.

"I need to go somewhere else for a fresh start, get my head down again and play some football.

"I would hate to leave under a cloud, and if I stay, the supporters know that I'll give what I always give and that's 100%."

Lawrence joined Stoke on loan from Sunderland in November 2006, before signing a £500,000 permanent deal at the Britannia Stadium two months later.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy signed Lawrence whilst in charge of Sunderland, and Lawrence said he would be interested in linking up again with his former manager.

"I still speak to Mick now and again because he's a nice person and someone I've got a lot of respect for," he added.

"If something did happen with Wolves, I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at it, but I'm not saying in any shape or form that I'm wanting to leave to Stoke for Wolves at this moment."
