Buddies boss hits back at Dougal

Former Fifa referee Stuart Dougal
Former referee Dougal now has his own newspaper column

Gus MacPherson has hit back at Stuart Dougal after comments the former referee made in his newspaper column.

Dougal was critical of the St Mirren manager's treatment of referees and referred to an incident in a match he played at Ibrox six years ago.

"I think you can see Stuart's been waiting to get a column to massage his ego and stay involved in the game," MacPherson told BBC Scotland.

"The way he conducts himself is very childish and lacking professionalism."

Dougal declined the right to reply.

In his newspaper column, the former Fifa referee said that he had nicknamed MacPherson as "Greetin' Gus" in reference to how much he complained to and about match officials.

He recounted an anecdote from Rangers' title winning match in 2003, when MacPherson, playing for Dunfermline, was penalised for a pass-back.

Dougal admitted he had made an error but said he could have sent off MacPherson for the vociferous nature of his protestations.

I've had a private conversation with him and that's how it'll remain until I do my book

"The criticism he got during the game at Ibrox - which was some years ago - I was right and he was wrong," responded MacPherson.

"He didn't know the rule. The ball came off a Rangers player last, but he still awarded them an indirect free-kick.

"He then didn't speak to me for about seven months - which he admitted himself was very childish. But he's done it to other managers.

"I've had a private conversation with him and that's how it'll remain until I do my book.

"I'm sure he's got a hit list. But there are other managers who know how he conducts himself."

Former Fifa referee Dougal retired towards the end of last season after almost 24 years in football.
