Southend have been given the go-ahead
to build their new 22,000-seater
stadium by the town's council.
Southend's have been at Roots Hall for over half a century
The Championship club are proposing to move from the 12,440-capacity Roots Hall, their home for more than 50 years, to the Fossetts Farm site.
The approved application will now be referred to the Secretary of State, although it is likely the government office will rubber stamp the decision.
"It's the most important day this club's had," said chairman Ron Martin.
He added: "We are on an upward spiral of success and a new stadium will help that continue.
"We've taken attendances from 4,000 to 10,000 and the new stadium will see that rise even further."
Manager Steve Tilson and assistant Paul Brush said the possibility of relocating was a major factor in their decision to sign new one-year contract extensions with the club last month.
