Saints end Delgado contract
Southampton striker Agustin Delgado
Delgado made only five first-team starts for Southampton
Southampton have cancelled the contract of Ecuador striker Agustin Delgado.

The 29-year-old, a 3.25m signing from Necaxa, has been plagued by injury since signing in October 2001.

Southampton chairman Rupert told the club's website: "Tino was very popular at Southampton and in a way he became a bit of a cult figure.

"We're all sad to see him go and wish him well. He's a quality player but unfortunately we couldn't get him fit enough for the Premiership."

Delgado arrived needing knee surgery - a problem that continued to plague him - while he also suffered back problems.

During his injury-hit spell with Southampton, Delgado made only five first-team starts and 10 appearances as a substitute.

In a bid to build up match fitness he returned home to Ecuador and joined Aucas on loan and, with fewer physical demands and less intensity to the game, he was able to rediscover his goalscoring touch.

But Southampton have opted to save on a year's wages by cancelling the 29 year-old's contract.

Delgado arrived at Southampton with an impressive goalscoring record in club and international football - where he has scored 22 goals in 49 appearances for Ecuador.
