Former Marseille coach Alain Perrin has admitted that he would be interested in taking over from Gordon Strachan as Southampton manager.

Perrin has been tipped to replace Strachan, whose St Mary's contract finishes at the end of the season.

And the Frenchman told BBC Sport that he would seriously consider any proposal to manage in the Premiership.

"I have not had any contact with Southampton, but it is something that could appeal to me," said Perrin.

"To manage in England is an objective of mine, and it would be an interesting challenge.

"There are several managers in the Premiership that I know well and lots of players.

"Southampton signed their central defender Michael Svensson from my former club Troyes."

It has been reported that Strachan could be replaced within the next two weeks, with his last two games at the helm Saints' home match with Fulham and their trip to Arsenal.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe is said to have taken the decision to terminate Strachan's reign early after the Scotsman rejected proposals to work in tandem with his successor until the end of the season.

Although Perrin was sacked by Marseille, he is still under contract with the club.

But he indicated that he could soon be free to talk to interested parties.

"The situation with Marseille has not yet been cleared up, but it could be in 10 to 15 days," he said.

"I have not thought about what I might do next, but if there is contact [from Southampton] then I would consider it."

Perrin propelled French minnows Troyes from the fourth division to the top flight.

His success there brought him to the attention of Marseille, who he guided into this season's Champions League.

But he paid the price when his 20-month tenure ended after Marseille were eliminated at the group stage and their league form slumped with a run of nine defeats in 15 games.

Perrin's fellow Frenchman Phillipe Troussier has also been linked with Southampton.

But Saints would have to pay the Qatari Football Association hefty compensation to buy out his three-year contract.
