Shrewsbury stadium in England bid for Euro U-21 finals

Shrewsbury Town's Greenhous Meadow home is one of five Midland grounds chosen alongside Wembley for England's bid to host the 2013 European Under-21 finals.

Shrewsbury have been named, along with East Midlands clubs, Derby, Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Chesterfield.

"It's a huge opportunity to stage at least three games," general manager Jon Harris told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"Just imagine: the cream of Holland, Italy, Spain and, of course, England playing here at Shrewsbury."

Shrewsbury moved to the new-build, 10,000 capacity stadium in 2007 after selling the Gay Meadow, their home of 97 years on the banks of the River Severn, for development.

"That was a lovely ground with its own history and charm," said Harris. "But, to be honest, we'd never have been considered for this honour if we'd still been there.

"This opportunity isn't just good news for local football fans - it would also mean thousands of tourists coming to Shrewsbury and to Shropshire."

The new Meadow has already staged England under-19 and women's internationals.
