Downes sets sights on play-offs

Downes says a winning mentality must return on Saturday

Reading coach Wally Downes has conceded the play-offs represent their most realistic route to the Premier League.

Three points from their last four games has seen the Royals slip down to fifth place in the table, seven points off second place with four games left.

Downes told BBC Radio Berkshire he is demanding to see desire from his team.

He said: "It's about time we looked into one another's eyes and whoever wants to die for the cause, those are the players we want now."

He added: "If there's anyone with any doubts or who we're not sure about, let them bail out now. We have to show some guts to get the glory.

"We are where we are and now's the time to roll our sleeves up to take some good momentum into what would be a great way to go up."

Downes added he expects the supporters to play their part too in the two remaining home games.

"They had the glory of the Championship-winning side, the Premiership season and the disappointment of going down.

"If I'm asking the players for some blood and guts, then I'm sure the fans are going to see them give them that and respond in kind."

Reading versus Barnsley kicks off at 1500 BST and is live on BBC Radio Berkshire.
