Rangers striker Kris Boyd interests Wigan

Wigan are ready to join the race to sign Rangers striker Kris Boyd, BBC Scotland has learned.

Rangers' top-scorer's contract expires at the end of the season, and the Latics are likely to wait and see if the player becomes a free agent.

Birmingham and Middlesbrough have already expressed an interest in the 26-year-old forward.

Meanwhile, Boyd's team-mate Kirk Broadfoot has opened negotiations on extending his current Ibrox deal.

As well as Broadfoot and Boyd, Nacho Novo and DaMarcus Beasley are also out of contract in the summer.

Novo turned down the initial offer put to him by Rangers, but further talks are planned between the Spaniard's representative and chief executive Martin Bain.

No such discussions are currently planned with Beasley, who has said he wants to stay at the Scottish Premier League leaders.

Rangers' manager Walter Smith insists a new deal for the league's record scorer Boyd is a priority for the Glasgow club.

Last week, Smith confirmed further discussions have taken place with Boyd's agent as he seeks to retain the striker beyond the summer.

Bain has met Mark Donaghy to discuss terms put to the player before Christmas.

"He's the one we have started with first," said Smith of the discussions to convince Boyd to stay at Ibrox.

Donaghy and Boyd, who is currently sidelined by injury, are mulling over what emerged from the talks before going back to the club with their thoughts.

Rangers have received no offers for the player and an enquiry from Birmingham was met with no encouragement.

Martin Bain spoke with Kris's agent and the club made him an offer. They have been left to think about it and that's what they are currently doing.

"We have quite a few players out of contract at the of the season, so we have to start trying to get those players tied up," said Smith.

"Kris is the first one we have gone to and we hope we can get it sorted out."

"The offer has been made and Kris and his agent are off to think about it now."

Smith also maintained there have been no offers for Pedro Mendes, despite speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Sporting Lisbon.

However, Rangers are aware of the Portuguese club's interest.

Wigan signed defender Gary Caldwell from Celtic on Wednesday but failed with an attempt to prize striker Scott McDonald away from the same club.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez watched McDonald score against Rangers in the 3 January Old Firm derby but his club baulked at Celtic's asking price.
