Smith wary of Rangers title talk

Rangers striker Kris Boyd
Smith said Boyd had his best game under his management

Walter Smith says other teams could still derail Rangers title bid after the 1-0 win over Celtic at Ibrox.

Steven Davis' only goal of the game took Rangers two points clear in the SPL table with three games to go.

"We're on a good run just now and we've put ourselves in a good position," said the Rangers boss.

"But to say winning the Old Firm games wins the league is disrespectful to other teams and remember that Aberdeen beat us on the last day last year."

Celtic and Rangers went into match-day 38 last term level on points.

But Aberdeen produced a 2-0 win over Rangers as Celtic beat Dundee United to take their third title in succession.

And Smith warned the fans to expect the team to face similar obstacles as this title race draws to a conclusion.

"Aberdeen didn't have a great deal to play for then, but they couldn't have got any more effort out of their players," said Smith.

"So we'll encounter that kind of attitude in the three games to go, but we'll have to show we're better than that.

"We've no complaints this season. We had a fixture pile-up to contend with last year, so it's up to us to show we can do it."

The Rangers manager was satisfied with the way his side performed over the 90 minutes, but he singled out striker Kris Boyd for particular praise.

"Our whole team worked very hard. I think Kris typified that more than anything," he said.

"A lot of the time as a manager I've said he gets goals and he maybe doesn't take part in the game much.

"But I thought he was excellent. It was one of his best performances for us.

"It would have been nice for him to get a goal in the second half, but Artur Boruc made a great save.

"He's a popular player for us and, not just today but in recent weeks, his efforts for the team have been terrific."
