Phil Brown appointed Preston North End's new manager

Preston North End have appointed Phil Brown as their new manager on an 18-month contract.

The 51-year-old former Derby and Hull boss succeeds Darren Ferguson, who was sacked along with his assistant Kevin Russell at the end of December.

Brown, who led Hull to the Premier League in 2008, takes over with North End bottom of the Championship.

His first match in charge of the club will be Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie with Nottingham Forest at Deepdale.

Brown told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Personally, I'm delighted. I've had eight or nine months of real frustration and we thought the job we did at Hull would have got us straight back into the game.

"But now we've got an opportunity to manage a Championship club, albeit in the situation that they're in.

"We've got 22 games to go and we've probably got to win over half of those to stay in this league."

Brown's main achievements as a manager came with Hull, whom he led to Championship play-off final glory in 2008 before keeping them in the Premier League during the 2008-09 season.

He was put on gardening leave in March 2010 with the Tigers embroiled in another relegation battle and left in June after both sides agreed a compensation deal.

"Having sat down with the chairman [Maurice Lindsay] and the owner [Trevor Hemmings] I was more than excited after the conversations we had," Brown added.

"They were one of ambition, one of trying to get out of the situation that we're in, but one we think that we can achieve.

"I know there's a lot of apathy around at the moment because of where we are in the division but we know exactly what's required. We've been there before and the confidence of the players needs raising immediately.

"When you're at the bottom of the division everything seems to go against you and you slip into that negative mode, but if we can take what we do during training into Saturday then we've got half a chance."
