Darren Carter to consider Preston North End future

Preston midfielder Darren Carter admits lack of first-team football could mean he has to leave Deepdale.

The 26-year-old, who won promotion with Birmingham and West Brom, has started only nine league games for North End this season.

Carter told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I'll sit down at the end of the season and see what's best for me.

"If I feel that I'm not going to get an opportunity then I'm not the sort of person who wants to sit around."

He added: "I want to kick on with my career. I think it's a pivotal time for me, so if that means me kick-starting somewhere else who knows?

Carter joined Preston in August 2007 but has failed to hold down a regular place in the team under managers Paul Simpson, Alan Irvine and Darren Ferguson in that time.

He enjoyed a rare start against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

"When I came here I came to play. The first season I came was a tricky one for us we were down the bottom of the table and fighting relegation," said Carter.

"Last year for large quantities I wasn't in the squad so you can't do anything from the stand, that's the problem."

Carter has started three of the 17 matches since Ferguson replaced Irvine at Deepdale in January.

Ferguson acknowledged Carter's frustration.

"Darren always trains well. He's been frustrated at not getting the games he thinks he should, which is what I want," said Ferguson.

"But I think if you look at the lads we've brought in, Matt James and Paul Coutts have done very well. Richard Chaplow's last three away games have been very good.

"Darren does give me options because of the balance of his left-foot. If you speak to anyone about Darren Carter the first thing they'll say is he's a good footballer.

"He's got a good left foot, he's a good size with good energies and it's up to the lad now."
