Port Vale boss Martin Foyle has signed Bristol City striker Lee Matthews to replace the departing Stephen McPhee.
"It's great for a club in our position to be able to sign a good quality striker, who has played at a higher level," Foyle told his club's website.
"He's had his injuries but is over them and he's keen to show what he can do."
Matthews joined City from Leeds United for £100,000 in March 2001 but was restricted to just 16 starts for the Robins, scoring 11 times.
Last season, the 25-year-old played on loan at Darlington, Bristol Rovers and Yeovil Town.
Vale have been given a further boost with captain Sam Collins' decision to sign a new two-year contract.
