Port Vale have signed Austrian international Andreas Lipa.

The 32-year-old moves to Vale Park from Greek club Xanthi.

Lipa, who can operate as a sweeper or in midfield, previously played for Grazer Athletic Club (GAK) in Austria and has tasted European football in the Uefa Cup in each of the last five seasons.

"I've seen him play and he is a quality player who has performed at the highest level," Vale boss Brian Horton told his club's website.

"He has good technical ability, is strong in the air and has gained a reputation as an attacking defender."

Lipa is expected to be the first of a number of new faces to join the Valiants this summer.

Meanwhile, Vale have also confirmed the appointment of Ian Brightwell as their new-player coach.

The 35-year-old former Manchester City and Port Vale defender was released at the end of last season but has now been given a new deal.

"We have signed Ian Brightwell as a player on a 12-month contract and he will also be my first-team coach," added Horton.

"I have known Ian for a long time. He was at Manchester City with me and I believe it is important to appoint somebody who I know."
