Plymouth Argyle 'set to prosper' from World Cup bid


Stapleton overwelmed by bid win

Plymouth Argyle director Paul Stapleton has said the city's inclusion in the England 2018 World Cup bid shows the level of ambition within the club.

Stapleton told BBC Spotlight that being named in the bid "gives our fans belief that we can fulfil certain things".

He added: "What it means now is that we have to crack on with the stadium and to make the Wembley of the South West."

Plymouth is one of 12 cities selected to be part of the England 2018 World Cup bid.

Stapleton added that tackling Argyle's current lack of form on the pitch was now a pressing priority for the board at Home Park.

The Pilgrims are currently second-from-bottom in the Championship and without a win in the league since the start of November.

"We have ambitions for the Premiership," said Stapleton.

"I know we're struggling in the league at the minute and we're trying to arrest that, but we need our fans to support us, not to give up on us.

"We need to have a feel good factor about the fact that Plymouth's been selected."
