Sturrock determined to fight on

Plymouth Argyle manager Paul Sturrock has said building a competitive team is his most pressing priority.

The Pilgrims are yet to win a Championship game this season, but Sturrock said he is not affected by the pressure to get results.

Sturrock told BBC Radio Devon: "I see a job in hand and I don't feel pressure."

He added: "I am excited about this job again, over the start of the season we've had smatterings of a squad coming together, but time is what we need."

Three points at Home Park against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, will ease some of the early season malaise amongst Plymouth fans.

Sturrock said: "We need a win, I don't think anybody would argue with that.

"It's an important game to set our stall out at home and we've got to go out there and grind out a result.

"It took me five years at St. Johnstone to mould a squad that got promotion and then stay up in the league for some years after that," Sturrock added.

Sheffield Wednesday beat Scunthorpe 4-0 at Hillsborough in their last league game and Sturrock knows the Owls will come to Plymouth full of confidence.

The Pilgrims boss spent two years in charge at Hillsborough between 2004-6, taking them into the Championship during the 2005/6 season.

"I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday and the fans and me had a great relationship and I really enjoyed my time up there."

Reacting to criticism of his side's supposed favour of over-using a target man at the top of a diamond formation, Sturrock revealed a sense of pique over the concerns.

"The important thing is to put wins on the board," he said.

"I've seen many styles of play over the years and normally what you find is that if you win the football game your style of play is acceptable, when you don't win it's the reason why you're not winning. "

"If you look at some of the games we've played this season we're passing the ball much more than we where last season, and we're more solid as far as team spirit amongst the players is concerned."
