Cairney makes switch to Firhill

Queen's Park midfielder Paul Cairney has signed for Partick Thistle - but will return to his former club on loan.

The 20-year-old will spend the first half of the season with the Spiders before joining up with his new Partick team-mates in January.

Cairney appeared 65 times for Queen's Park, scoring eight goals, since making his debut in 2005.

Thistle manager Ian McCall was quick to hail his new signing: "I think he is a real talent and is one for the future."

McCall see Cairney as part of his "three-five year development plan for Partick Thistle".

"Paul will be back here at Firhill in the New Year and I expect him to be pushing hard for a first team place next season if not the latter half of this season," said the manager.

McCall also made it clear that he remains keen to add to his striking options, with last season's top scorer, Liam Buchanan, still recovering from injury.

"Ideally I would like to sign two strikers before the start of the season, one with real physical presence and one with pace," he said.

"I'm hopeful that we will see Liam back playing in a Thistle jersey again sometime around the middle of August.

"I rate him as the best striker in the First Division and I want us to all enjoy his talents while we can because I'm convinced that other clubs will be looking very carefully at him."
