Oxford United swoop for defender Sangare

York wanted Sangare to stay at Bootham Crescent

Oxford have signed former York defender Djoumin Sangare.

The 27-year-old left the Minstermen for Casablanca in December, but his deal with the Moroccan side fell through.

Sangare, who has also had spells with Salisbury and Stafford, was on trial with Lincoln before agreeing to join Oxford until the end of the season.

He told BBC Oxford: "It's a good opportunity for me, Oxford are a big club. They shouldn't be in League Two, they should be much higher."

Sangare added: "I want to try and help them and impress them during this short spell and hopefully get a longer contract."

The French-born defender played against the U's in their 3-1 win over York in last season's Blue Square Premier play-off final.

"Oxford broke my heart last year," he said. "I did have the opportunity to go abroad earlier in the season (with Casablanca), but the deal fell through so I've come back to England and Chris Wilder called me up and offered me this contract.

"This is an opportunity to play somewhere with ambition and somewhere where I can enjoy my football."
