Notts County are not cheats - Ray Trew

Trew hits back at critics

Notts County chairman Ray Trew says the club are not cheats following their promotion to League One.

The Magpies have been under a transfer embargo after breaking salary cap regulations earlier in the season.

Trew told BBC Midlands Late Kick Off: "We've been labelled cheaters by a number of chairmen in our division.

"We, as a new regime, have brought the salary to turnover ratio down to 54.9%, which is 5.1% below the Football League's recommendation."

Trew bought the club for a £1 from Peter Trembling in February, who in turn had purchased the Magpies from Munto Finance for the same price.

"Under the old regime the salary cap was smashed, for want of a better phrase. As a result of that the club were [transfer] embargoed by the Football League," Trew added.

The former Lincoln City chairman has invested heavily in the Magpies since taking over, staving off the threat of administration.

The Magpies' 4-1 victory over Morecambe at the weekend officially secured their place in League One.

"Whilst people brand us cheaters, let's not forget we have been punished for it with the Football League transfer embargo and yet we have not broken the rules," said Trew.

"I don't understand people who go out and make rash statements, unless they have back-up information to support the statements."
