Northampton boss Sampson focuses on developing youth

Osman deal not done - Sampson

Northampton Town boss Ian Sampson says he has high expectations for the younger members of his squad.

The Cobblers have signed 18-year-old midfielder Nathaniel Wedderburn, and agreed new deals with a host of their young players, including Liam Davis.

Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "These younger players will have hunger and help us get out of this league.

"With the budget that's been set, we need to look at different types of players - players with potential."

He added: "Our expectations are the same as the fans. We want to get promoted, either straight up or through the play-offs.

"We will do it in a different way and not rely on having lots of players and experience."

Midfielder Abdul Osman, 23, is still considering a new contract offer from the club.

"Contrary to reports, it's not been agreed yet," said Sampson.

"He's quite happy with it, at the moment it isn't 100 percent agreed but it looks like he will sign."

Northampton have made one summer signing so far, and Sampson is not looking to bring in a host of new faces for 2010/11.

"It's about getting the right players for the right price. If it takes a few weeks, it takes a few weeks.

"Maybe we have to look at loans, or taking a gamble through our scouting network.

"A centre-forward is the priority. If Abdul signs, our midfield is sorted, and we have enough defenders."
