Hughton eager to retain Newcastle striker Andy Carroll

Carroll netted 19 goals for Newcastle this season

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is keen to fend off interest from rival clubs for striker Andy Carroll.

Premier League champions Chelsea have been linked with the 21-year-old, whose 17 league goals last season were key to Newcastle's top-flight return.

Hughton insists he has had no contact from the west London club.

And he told The Chronicle: "We've got no intention of seeing Andy leave Newcastle. He's a young player and he's got a big future here with us."

Finances are expected to be tight at Newcastle next season, and Carroll was alleged to have been involved in a training ground row with team-mate Steven Taylor which fuelled rumours that one of the pair would be sold over the summer.

In May, Carroll pledged his immediate future to the north-east club.

"It's always been my ambition to play for Newcastle United and score goals at St James' Park," he said after promotion from the Championship had been confirmed.

"I think most people know that I don't want to leave. I have been at Newcastle since I was 10 and I'm totally committed."

Hughton has also dismissed speculation that Newcastle are close to signing Rangers forward Kris Boyd, who is to quit Ibrox, but has not ruled out a future move for the boyhood Newcastle fan.

He said: "Kris Boyd is a good player, but I can categorically say that there have been no talks at this stage You never want to say 100% no, but it's a non-starter at this moment."
