Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thomson faces a two-month lay-off after fracturing the fibula in his right leg during Boro's 0-0 draw with Leicester.
The 26-year-old was making only his second start for Gordon Strachan's side since arriving from Rangers in July.
Thomson is also set to miss Scotland's opening Euro 2012 qualifiers.
"It's bad news for the player and a big loss for the team because he has been our best passer in the first two league games," Strachan told the club website.
The former Hibernian player will visit a specialist on Monday but is not expected to be required to undergo surgery.
"That's two stretchers in two weeks because we lost Willo Flood long-term last week too," added Strachan.
"We've not had much luck with injuries in my time here."
Thomson will miss the start of Scotland's Euro 2012 campaign in Lithuania on 3 September and the visit of Liechtenstein to Hampden Park four days later.
The central midfielder will also be a doubt for October's games against Czech Republic and Spain.
