Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams targets World Cup

Williams acclaims 'unbelievable year'

Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams has targeted a World Cup summer with Australia to cap an impressive individual campaign at the Riverside.

Williams, 21, has made an impact on the first-team this season and is keen to achieve domestic success in the Championship play-offs.

"The World Cup is in my head," Williams told BBC Look North.

"The main thing is to get points, get in the play-offs, and hopefully I'll be on the plane to South Africa as well."

Middlesbrough are currently six points off sixth place in the Championship but Williams believes they can still make the play-offs.

He said: "We've got seven games, there's a lot to play for, we've got some hard games but we've got a lot to win.

"If results go our way, and a lot of them did the other day, then we've got a chance, but we need to get the points ourselves."

Williams, who was capped at U-21 level for Wales but eventually opted to become a full Australia international, recently agreed an extension to his contract that ties him to the club until summer 2013.
