McClaren keen on winning farewell
Steve McClaren
McClaren's last game in charge will be Boro's biggest ever match
Steve McClaren says he is determined to leave Middlesbrough on a high after it was confirmed that he will take over as England coach on 1 August.

Next week Boro face Sevilla in the Uefa Cup final, and McClaren told the club website that winning would be the perfect way to say goodbye.

"I'm so pleased I was able to help deliver success to Middlesbrough because everyone deserves it," he said.

"Every effort will be made to ensure we end my time at Boro with some glory."

McClaren said that getting the England job made him "the proudest man in England," and that the fact he was chosen for it was testament to all the work put in by everyone at Middlesbrough.

"It's a great day for me but it can only reflect well on the club and everyone who's been a part of what we've achieved over the past five years," he said.

"The chairman took a gamble on me when he made me manager but I remain grateful for his fantastic support.

"Equally, my staff have always remained hugely loyal. Along with the players, they are the key reason I have been able to help bring success to Boro - and therefore the reason I am joining England.

"We have enjoyed some marvellous occasions and Boro will always remain close to my heart.

"Hopefully we can top the lot next Wednesday when we play Sevilla in what will be my last game as Boro manager."

Chief executive Keith Lamb said he was sad to see McClaren leave the Riverside Stadium.

"Whilst we are sorry to lose Steve, we are delighted he is leaving for such a prestigious role," he told the club website.

"It's an honour for Middlesbrough that our manager should become the next England coach."
