FA asks Man City's Mark Hughes to explain ref remarks

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has been asked by the Football Association to explain comments about referee Mark Clattenburg after the game at Bolton.

Hughes called Clattenburg's performance "mystifying - at times laughable" after he sent off City's Welsh striker Craig Bellamy in Saturday's 3-3 draw.

Bellamy was booked for dissent and got a second yellow for an alleged dive.

Hughes also claimed that Clattenburg had "passed judgement on what he thinks of Craig Bellamy" during half-time.

Hughes, who has until 22 December to respond, has said that now the FA are involved, he will keep his counsel.

But he added that he has not changed his mind on the matter.

"What I said on Saturday is still on record and I stand by it," Hughes said.

"The FA have asked for my version of events so I can't really discuss the matter any further."

Bellamy's dismissal was his first in seven years and followed a challenge from Bolton defender Paul Robinson, who appeared to have clipped the Wales captain as he ran through on goal.

But Clattenburg adjudged that Bellamy had dived and gave him his second booking - which means he will miss Wednesday's encounter with Tottenham as he serves a one-match ban.
