Groclin send Man City out
Groclin Dyskobolia 0-0 Manchester City
(Aggregate 1-1; Groclin go through on away goals)

Man City striker Nicolas Anelka

Manchester City were sent crashing out of the Uefa Cup after failing to make the breakthrough against a dogged Groclin Dyskobolia in Poland.

In a disjointed performance, City wasted a host of excellent chances, with strikers Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Fowler the most culpable.

Groclin knew a goalless draw would be enough to see them through after grabbing an important away goal in the first leg.

And they got they result they needed, although they had numerous chances to win on their own turf.

They created the game's opening chance after three minutes when Sebastian Mila got on the end of Radek Mynar's cross only for David Seaman to save well.

City responded immediately and came close to breaking the deadlock when Steve McManaman blasted over from the edge of the box.

Trevor Sinclair also had a decent opportunity but could not get any power on his header from an inviting cross by Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Fowler went close on 23 minutes with a long-range strike before Sun Jihai's last-gasp tackle deflected Andrzeg Niedzielan's shot behind after the City defence had been cut to shreds.

67 mins: Fowler heads wide from Wright-Phillips cross
68 mins: Anelka misses one-on-one with keeper

City had another narrow escape from the resulting corner, Lumir Sedlacek's powerful header diverted onto the post by Fowler.

And only an amazing clearance from Richard Dunne kept the game goalless, the City defender somehow diverting Niedzielan's shot wide after the striker had rounded Seaman.

City slowly recovered their composure and were presented with a superb opportunity just two minutes into the second period when Mariusz Pawlak gifted possession to Anelka.

But the chance went begging when the Frenchman's cutback fell short of Fowler.

City allowed the hosts to create chances throughout the half and were let off the hook as Rasiak and Tomasz Wieszczycki both dragged efforts wide.

On 67 minutes, Wright-Phillips latched onto Anelka's knockdown on the right and sent a dangerous centre across the face of goal, but Fowler's header drifted off target.

Fowler sliced another effort horribly wide and when Anelka allowed Groclin keeper Mariusz Liberda to save when clear through, City boss Kevin Keegan had seen enough.

He hauled both strikers off and replaced them with Jon Macken and Paulo Wanchope, but City could not get the goal they needed.
