Leicester City fail with David Beckham bid

Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has admitted that he failed with an audacious move for David Beckham.

The Foxes' new owners have sanctioned moves to bring star names to the Walkers Stadium.

But Eriksson said neither the 35-year-old ex-England captain, nor Roque Santa Cruz and Robbie Keane, will be coming.

"I spoke to David's agent to see if there was a chance. He said it was not possible. I knew, but I had to try," he told BBC Radio Leicester.

Eriksson has also been linked with Beckham's former Real Madrid and England team-mate Michael Owen, but denied that he has made an approach for the Manchester United striker.

"I have made phone calls to all the players mentioned, apart from Michael Owen," he added.

"Most of them don't want to come to our league. If we were in the Premier League it would be much easier to get those kinds of players."

With Leicester currently 16th in the Championship, seven points outside the play-off places, Eriksson believes that assembling such a stellar cast is unlikely, regardless of the money being offered by the club's Thai-based owners.

But that did not stop him making a bold move to bring Beckham, Eriksson's old England captain, from LA Galaxy.

"If you talk about Beckham, of course I would take Beckham, but I don't think he will go anywhere.

"The club he is playing for don't want another year like they had when he went to Milan.

"I don't think it would be fair if we are in the middle of the table to pay the money and it is difficult for a player to drop down that much in terms of level.

"We will go on trying but it is difficult."
