Leicester City have appointed former Swansea City boss Paulo Sousa as their new manager.

Sousa, 39, left his position at Swansea by mutual consent on Monday after just over a year in charge.

Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric said: "I am delighted to acquire a manager of such great calibre. I believe he is the right man to take our club forward."

The Foxes have been without a manager since Nigel Pearson left to take over at Hull City at the end of June.

Former Portugal international Sousa had only been in charge at Swansea for just over a year - following a five-month spell as QPR boss.

Sousa took over at QPR in November 2008 but had his contract terminated in April after 26 games, which yielded seven wins.

He then replaced Roberto Martinez at the Liberty Stadium two months later but leaves after guiding them to 18 wins in his 49 games in charge.

Sousa has a tough act to follow at Leicester after Pearson led them to promotion from League One and then a Championship play-off spot in his two seasons in charge.

But he told BBC Radio Leicester he believes he can build on Pearson's good work and has targeted promotion: "We are quite confident in ourselves.

"We will be very competitive and strong this season. We want win every game we want to be in the top but we have other strong opponents too.

"I need to understand what squad I have. I don't like to change too much especially when things are going well."

And Sousa said part of the appeal of the move was the fact that he considered Leicester to be a big club with a proud history.

"I am delighted to be here, it is a great club with great supporters and a rich history and I am very excited by the challenge," he added.

"The club has a fantastic stadium with great facilities and I am very much looking forward to working with the players."
