Thatcher snipes at Hoddle
Ben Thatcher
Thatcher has no regrets about leaving Spurs
Leicester City's Ben Thatcher has blamed Glenn Hoddle for the demise of his Spurs career.

Thatcher joined Spurs, then managed by George Graham, in the summer of 2000 for 5m.

But Thatcher believes Hoddle's arrival in April 2001 was the beginning of the end of his White Hart Lane career.

The defender has just completed a 300,000 move to Leicester and became the latest Spurs departure to criticise Hoddle's style of management.

Micky Adams came across as a manager who is in different class... I don't think that description would ever have occurred to me with Hoddle

"Glenn Hoddle made up his mind about who he rated and who he didn't and I was on the wrong list," Thatcher told the Daily Mirror newspaper.

"During my talks with Leicester over moving to the Walkers Stadium, Micky Adams came across as a manager who is in different class. So did Dave Bassett, the director of football.

"But I don't think that sort of description would ever have occurred to me in connection with Hoddle. Do I need to spell it out more than that?"

Thatcher is not the first player to bemoan Hoddle's management skills - Teddy Sheringham, who left Spurs to join Portsmouth this summer, was equally scathing of the Tottenham boss.

The 27-year-old, once tipped to play for England, was seldom in the Spurs first team last season and believes his need for regular football was the ultimate reason to sign for Leicester.

"For a player, it's all about regular first-team football, preferably in the Premiership," said Thatcher.

"Hopefully, that is what I will enjoy with Micky Adams and Leicester. But if I'd stayed at Spurs, I suspect there would have been little prospect of such excitement for me."
