Hughes earns new Leeds contract

Leeds United midfielder Andy Hughes has signed a 12-month extension to his contract at Elland Road.

The ex-Oldham, Notts County, Reading and Norwich City player has played 69 games since joining Leeds on a two-year deal at the start of last season.

A hamstring injury has sidelined Hughes since beating Cheltenham in February.

But Hughes, 31, returned to training last week and was due to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

"I'm back fit and training now," said Hughes. "I was in the squad on Saturday and wasn't involved but I can't grumble about that because the boys have done well.

"That's one thing about this manager. If you're doing well you keep your place and keep the shirt."

Having sorted out his short-term future, Hughes is now hoping to bring a successful end to the season by winning promotion. And, 12 months on from Leeds' play-off final failure against Doncaster Rovers under Gary McAllister, he has backed Simon Grayson to take them up this time.

"It was a good win on Saturday," he said. "And there's a good feel about the place - the manager knows how to get success.

"He's done it at Blackpool, he's got good staff around, bubbly players, and at the end of the season we need it.

"If we can start nicking wins away from home, it'll set us up for a final push towards the end of the season.

"I have a good feeling about it. The manager knows how to win games and sets teams to out win games."
