Roy Keane to stick with Ipswich Town squad

Ipswich 1-3 Barnsley

Ipswich Town boss Roy Keane says he will not be asking the club's board for extra funds to bolster his squad.

Town are without Luke Hyam and Mark Kennedy because of hamstring injuries, while an ankle problem will keep David Norris out of Saturday's trip to Hull.

And a scan has revealed defender Gareth McAuley's Achilles injury could keep him out for three weeks.

"It's a case of where we're at, the players we have available," Keane told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"It's not a day of saying we need this and we need that, the only place for these young players to learn is out on this pitch."

Keane's lack of options was displayed in the weekend's 3-1 home defeat by Barnsley, with nine of the 16-man squad aged 21 or under, and eight of them playing some part in the match.

"I do want to give the young players the experience of playing at home and in the Championship and make them better players in terms of the overall picture," he added.

The loss to the Tykes was the Blues' third on the bounce and the Portman Road faithful expressed their displeasure by booing their side and, on occasions, cheering the passing moves of their opponents.

"I have no control over that, obviously as the manager I can look at myself and the team," Keane continued.

"But I can't control whether the supporters are going to boo players, boo me or cheer the opposition.

"It's the way it is, it's more than a bad day at the office, I'm not trying to play it down."

The Irishman was also forced to defend his decision to take off striker Tamas Priskin on the hour mark, with 17-year-old Connor Wickham coming on in his place.

"Tamas has done OK but sometimes you have to make the change, Connor gets in a little bit more behind," he said.

"When you lose matches people do tend to analyse your decision-making and you have to accept that."
