Hessenthaler joins Hull on loan

Hessenthaler is set to spend three months at the KC Stadium
Former Gillingham player-manager Andy Hessenthaler has joined League One promotion contenders Hull on a three-month loan deal.

The 39-year-old links up again with ex-Gills boss Peter Taylor, with whom he worked as player-coach.

The midfielder stepped down as player-boss at Priestfield in November, but has been a regular in the starting XI under new manager Stan Ternent.

"I know Andy well and I know what he's capable of," said Taylor.

"Hess will be here for three months but Gillingham have the option of a call-back after a month if they choose to do so.

"It's been a difficult time for Andy what with him being the manager there and now back with playing staff.

"He'll add a bit extra to our midfield and also has the experience - and is still determined - to do a job at this level.

"Andy will be here as a player for the time being and will not be taking a role in the coaching side of things."

Hessenthaler was voted as the Gills' best ever player in a BBC poll just over a week ago.

"Peter (Taylor) just felt my experience might give them a lift and might help push them to the end," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"It's an opportunity to get back with Peter, who I respect as a person and a manager.

"Also, with me off the (Gillingham) wage bill here it might help the new man get a player in to push us on as well.

"I'm going to go up there and play a few games and see what happens. It is a sad day, but I've got to think about Andy Hessenthaler as well."
